Mitchell River Watershed Management Group (MRWMG)
The Mitchell River Watershed Management Group was formed as the result of a conference on watershed management, hosted by the Kowanyama Aboriginal community in 1990.
Since then, the group has grown into an independent, not-for-profit organisation working in partnership with local communities and stakeholders to achieve:
- A balanced approach to the use of the catchment resources
- Sustainable and integrated management of the Mitchell River catchment
The Mitchell River catchment encompasses an area of 72,000 square kilometres (larger than the island of Tasmania), that ecompassses four diverse bioregions, including the Wet Tropics and the Gulf plains, and includes landscapres extending from the shores of the Coral Sea to those of the Gulf of Carpentaria.
