Western Cape Landcare Group and Weipa Community Garden Project

Project summary

This project was aimed at reinstatement and rehabilitation of Weipa waterfront from damage done by Cyclone Oswald, preventing the loss of culturally significant melaleuca stands and foreshore protection, and formally establishing a Weipa Community Garden and Western Cape Landcare Group. Cape and Coastal Care Pty Ltd hosted the projects to start-up stage when a residents' committee then assumed operational responsibility under the guidance of Landcare. Partners included the mining industry, education, Commonwealth department, contractors, local authority and Indigenous groups. Extensive meetings were continued to be held with prospective community partners to launch a Western Cape Landcare Group and Weipa Community Garden.

One key outcome was the establishment of a large-scale Community Garden for Weipa (for the first time), which will initiate a commercial nursery likely to be owned and operated by an Indigenous business. The garden required storage space for tools and equipment, and a shade structure for personnel and utilities.

The Landcare project operated activities in and immediately surrounding Weipa including land and waterway rehabilitation, weeds and feral animals containment, coastal remnant rainforest rehabilitation and beach restoration.
