Workshops on fire in Lockhart River
A regional fire planning workshop for east coast Traditional Owner groups held in Lockhart River earlier this month has been hailed a success.
Multiple stakeholders, including three Indigenous corporations, the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and Queensland Rural Fire Service along with three Cape York NRM staff – Project Officers Andrew Drenen, Maree Coulson and Marie Busschots – worked towards establishing each group’s fire management objectives for the year.
“We reviewed the 2023 fire maps for the region, including a state-of-the-art animation showing the 2023 fires,” Mr Drenen said.
“All the groups present intended to undertake some burning in 2024 but access to country was identified as a significant operational constraint, as many tracks in the region currently require repair and maintenance following extreme weather events.
“All groups were interested to hear about several upcoming projects coordinated by Cape York NRM.”
