Rinyirru certified fire crew training

The recent certified fire crew member training at Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park CYPAL, was a “resounding success,” according to South Cape York Catchments Inc Training Coordinator Toby Munro.

"Attendance exceeded our expectations, especially considering the challenges of the remote location,” he said.
He credited the behind-the-scenes efforts of Senior Rangers from the Queensland Indigenous Land & Sea Ranger and Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service (QPWS) Joint Management programs as crucial to the event's success.

Wider support from QPWS Operations and Tech Support (Fire Team) staff was also instrumental.  “All involved were extremely supportive and crucial to the program’s success,” Toby said.

He said their contributions were in terms of equipment, resources, staff time and managing logistics for the practice burn. He also extended his gratitude to Cape York NRM for their significant contribution.

“A huge thanks needs to be given to Cape York NRM for funding 50 percent of the up-front costs,” he said.

More than 30 individuals attended the training, representing various organisations including Cape Melville, Flinders & Howick Islands, Waarnthuurr-iin, Jabalbina Yalanji, Rinyirru (Lakefield), Balnggarrawarra, Wuthathi, Yirrganydji Rangers (Dawul Wuru) Aboriginal Corporations and Ipima Ikaya Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC, Lama Lama Rangers (Yintjingga Aboriginal Corporation) and Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service.
