Cooktown students look to the future
The future is looking bright for Cooktown State School students after the highly anticipated Cooktown Career Expo returned on October 13.
Some 110 students from Grades 6 to 12 attended the event held at Cooktown PCYC, where organisations showcased the opportunities available to students after they finish school.
Harry and Nat from our Sustainable Agriculture and Water Quality team set up a stall and borrowed an ant plant from the Cooktown Botanic Gardens which sparked lots of conversations with students about the threatened species, its interesting relationship with golden ants and apollo jewel butterflies.
“It was a great opportunity to chat with the future of Cape York Peninsula, and share what we do working with land managers and communities across the Cape to protect and improve the land, animals and water,” Harry said.
“Over the course of the day we talked about everything from our activities to protect the Reef to the fun we have travelling around the Cape.
“Being young professionals in NRM, Nat and I were well placed to give young people advice about their career path. I had no idea what I wanted to do after school, even in Year 12, so I was impressed to hear from so many students (even primary school students) who had their post-school plans figured out and had some great aspirations for the future.”
