Reef Community Action Plan
After consultation with the community through early 2022, we are pleased to release the June 2022 Update of the South-east Cape York Reef Community Action Plan. The Reef Community Action Plan was developed with the local community in 2020/21 and sets out a vision and priorities for local community action to protect the Reef and local environment. Some of the highlights of this update include:
- Seven priority projects put forward by the community have received funding, and four projects have actions already underway. This includes beach clean ups at Weary Bay, cultural heritage protection for Binthi Country and hymenachne control in Cape Melville
- Community members continue to be concerned about the impacts of garbage and poor tourism practices on our local environment. There is also a rising concern for the impacts of climate change on our Reef and marine environment, particularly among young people.
- The community continues to be involved in local Reef events including water quality school field trips, tree planting days and beach clean ups
