Where to from Weipa?
Curious minds, collectors of merchandise and questions, questions, questions set the tone for a bustling schools information expo at Weipa on August 18.
About 30 exhibitors, including Cape York NRM, presented their wares to show Western Cape College students from years 7-12 the opportunities available to them in the workforce.
The 2022 Weipa ‘Western Cape Careers Expo’ was held at the Weipa Storm Surge Shelter and was launched with moving cultural dance performances by students. The event attracted some 400 students who took turns in moving through the stalls to find out about job opportunities, job-seeking assistance and educational options after their school years are complete.
For most who questioned us, the idea of protecting endangered creatures and fire management appealed the most - and of course, the chance to travel around the Cape.
And while education and environment, agricultural and biodiversity degrees are a main pathway into NRM work, so, too, are TAFE courses and on-the-job training.
But our key message is: experience. Get out and volunteer, join a clean-up group, help in land care projects… it’s the way into nature’s playground.
