Cape York Fire Forum

Cape York NRM will host a two - day Fire Forum in Cooktown on 3-4 December 2019.

The free event is open to all Cape York land managers who have an interest in delivering, or learning about savanna burning carbon farming projects.

The event follows on from the 2016 Cape York Fire Forum which attracted over 100 Cape York land managers.

This year’s Forum will focus on current carbon farming fire projects, planning and monitoring and diversification and partnership opportunities.

Cape York NRM Fire and Biodiversity Manager Kerri Woodcock said the event was aimed at people who want to build Cape York’s carbon economy.

‘Savanna burning carbon projects generate a huge range of benefits, from protecting biodiversity and cultural heritage, to reducing the risk of wildfires which can threaten livelihoods and property,’ she said.

‘We also have the opportunity to develop a new regional income stream through savanna burning carbon projects. We are currently working on a Land Restoration Fund project which is examining the feasibility of land managers working together to develop an aggregated carbon farm.

‘In other words, we understand it might be complex, daunting and not necessarily economically viable for a land manager to start a carbon farming project individually, but if we create a group of properties under a single banner it may have the potential to increase profits and reduce administrative headaches for individuals.’

‘The Cape York Fire Forum 2019 is aimed at bringing people who have an interest in savanna burning carbon projects together to find out about the latest science, develop partnerships and find out what projects are already underway in the Cape.’

‘We have a full line up of presenters, running from cultural burning experts to the carbon scientists. We invite people who are excited about contributing to, and building a new economy for the region. This is one not to miss.’
