Mapoon Beach Clean-up - Tangaroa Blue
Volunteers are invited to join the only beach clean-up event on the western side of the Cape York Peninsula! The Back Beach of Mapoon is an exposed 14km stretch of beach north of the mining town Weipa where the group will work together with the Mapoon Land & Sea Rangers.
Due to its location on the Gulf of Carpentaria where most of the lost fishing gear of the Timor Sea gets trapped in the whirling current, this is the beach where giant ghost nets frequently get pulled out out of the sand and where more thongs and plastic drink bottles are found than anywhere else in the country.
For five days the group will be collecting and sorting the rubbish from this remote beach, and will stay at a basic bush camping area where a kitchen is set up to prepare to meals together. Kitchen equipment will be provided, but you will need to bring your own sleeping gear (tents, blankets, pillow, mattress, etc).
The group will depart from Cairns at 8am and travel over two days to the event, and back. Seats are limited so register early to secure your spot! Volunteers with their own 4WD vehicles are welcome to join the convoy to drive up to this event, or can meet the group there.
