Chuulangun Aboriginal Corporation

The Kuuku I'yu Northern Kaanju Pama people are moving back to Ngaachi, reaffirming their position as primary land managers of the region, with the purpose of maintaining healthy and sustainable homelands.

The sustainable indigenous management of Ngaachi was disrupted when we were moved forcibly from our lands and centralised in towns and artificial communities, under the protection and assimilation policies and practices of government.

The Northern Kaanju people living at Chuulangun have developed a comprehensive land management framework and plans that guide the appropriate care of  Ngaachi.

The management plans are guided by ancient principles of governance and landscape, and outline four land management programs of the Chuulangun Aboriginal Corporation:

1. Homelands Development

2. Land and Resource Management

3. Indigenous Knowledge, Language and Research

4. Economic Development, Employment, Training and Capacity Building.

The program plans interconnect,  ensuring the sustainability of Ngaachi and support the apiritual, social and economic health and wellbeing of th people.

In July 2002, the descendants of a leading Kuuku I'yu Northern Kaanju ancestor, who are members of the Claudie/Moreton/Nelson families living at Chuulangun on the upper Wenlock River, established Chuulangun Aboriginal Corporation under the Commonwealth Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporations Act, 2006, superceded the Act of 1976.
