Griffith University Component of the Reef Trust Gully Erosion Project
This project has been specifically designed by Griffith University and Cape York NRM to deliver cost effective strategic investment which goes beyong existing programmes in order to address sediment load flowing into the Great Barrier Reef from gully erosion.
The project is assisting in the delivery of the main outcome of the Reef Trust Gully Erosion Control Programme; to reduce sediment loads from gully erosion by 50% in the highest priority subcatchments in the Normanby Basin. In this specific project of the Programme the remediation sites are Crocodile Gap, Granite Normanby, and the West Normanby Bridge.
Through the direct seeding of native grasses and trees to bare areas within the 56ha of active gully complexes, strategic erosion control work to stabilise the most actively erroding gullies, and the erection of 14km of cattle exclusion fencing to prevent cattle and other livestock from causing more damage to 422ha of vulnerable gully sub-catchment this aspect of the Reef Trust Gully Erosion Control Programme aims to significantly reduce sediment run off from the specified sites.
