Gateway to the Cape construction to take off

Cape York NRM welcomes the Queensland Government and Cook Shire Council’s investment in Gateway to the Cape—a travellers’ rest stop and information centre in Lakeland Downs.

Gateway to the Cape Project Manager Waratah Nicholls said the $1.2 m investment in the initiative was welcome news for the community.

“This is such fabulous news, so many people have put their hearts into this project.

“The Gateway to the Cape will make so much difference to how travellers view Cape York Peninsula, providing information on places to visit, the roads, how to take care of our environment, the history and our heritage. The completed facility will also provide a gathering place for locals,” she said.

“In 2017, when the project kicked off, we created a competition as a means of finding the best design possible for the building. Lakeland local Gary O’Kane was judged the winner and we are thrilled his competition-winning design will soon become a reality.”

Cape York NRM was engaged with the Gateway project in its early stages and is pleased to see further investment in the project.

Cape York NRM CEO John Gavin said the Gateway project would benefit both travellers and locals.

“This project will see travellers learn more about Cape York’s history and heritage, how to travel lightly on the Cape and how to look after its fragile and culturally important environment, he said.

“It will also provide employment for Lakeland locals, and act as a community meeting place.”
