Looking ahead for Cape York

After 10 years of operations across the Cape, the members voted to position the organisation so that it could continue supporting the community for the next 10 years.

The new constitution is the result of 18 months of research, discussion and consideration to ensure that the Board has a strong knowledge base, skill set and diversity of members.

Chair Emma Jackson said that the Board is thrilled with the outcome. “The constitution will enhance the influence members have on the strategic direction of the organisation, and reflect the many ways that people live in and associate with the region,'' she said.

“The changes mean that people who no longer live in Cape York, but maintain a strong connection, will be able to continue playing a part in Cape York NRM,” Mrs Jackson said.

John Gavin, CEO, said that the constitution also means that directors will be chosen for their skills and experience, and that members will have a bigger say in the appointment of directors.

“Directors will represent a broad diversity, reflecting the Cape York community and ensuring that Cape York NRM’s corporate decision-making is informed by an extensive mix of skills, knowledge and perspectives,” he said.

Cape York NRM will soon be putting processes in place for this year’s director elections, and invites people interested in the management of Cape York’s natural resources and future to get involved.
