Your Climate Indigenous Climate Knowledge

Project summary

This project aimed to support Indigenous people on Cape York to share stories from Indigenous Elders and groups related to climate change and adaptation strategies, from their own worldview. The project produced high-definition film clips of Indigenous people of Cape York.  The outcomes included knowledge recording and sharing among Indigenous and non-Indigenous groups and land managers, improved education of land managers, youth and children and promotion of online portals for NRM information.

This project contributed to the activities of two Cape York NRM projects:

1. Planning for Climate Change Project:

  • Activity 8 Developed initial “Your climate” communications tools - fact sheets, website based information.
  • Activity 9 Developed “Your climate” engagement tools that focus information gathering questions refined and applied to all engagements. Executed development of workflow record for data management.
  • Activity 23 Implemented information campaign – updated website, use newsletter, produced relevant and targeted information in appropriate and varied mediums depending on the audience.
  • Activity 30 Up to two more focus/user scoping/training (knowledge exchange – existing and emerging CC information) workshops completed Activity 31 Developed Atlas and portal – links to Activities, 10, 13, 16, 17m 20, 26, 30 to inform development of Atlas and portal design, communication product design, demographics for atlas and usability. 
  • Activity 32 Developed two community case studies and focused knowledge recording training sessions
  • Activity 38 Formalised information flowing from Stream 2 Clusters (Monsoon and Wet Tropics) for information re-packaging to work with community to communicate findings and collect feedback
  • Activity 39 Prepared and finalised information to present in Atlas and for data visualisation pilots

2. Sustainable Environment Project:

  • Communications with a wide audience

  • Indigenous access to training opportunity
  • Support recording of Indigenous Ecological Knowledge
  • Continually promote awareness of key topics through the Atlas portal
  • Maintain Cape York Atlas portal for use as an information base and communications platform
