Cape York NRM have received funding through Round 1 of the Nest to Ocean Turtle Protection Program (NTOTPP) to support the on-going work of the Mapoon Land and Sea Management Program to protect marine turtles nesting on coastal areas managed by the Mapoon rangers. This work will complement activities already being conducted for ‘Project: Western Cape Feral Pig Control – Mapoon’ and as part of activities associated with participation in the Western Cape Turtle Threat Abatement Alliance (WCTTAA).
Through this project the Ranger program will:
· Contribute to development of public awareness raising materials regarding access and use of turtle nesting beaches during marine turtle nesting season and installation of associated signage on beach access points
· Review/develop pig management plan
· Conduct predator control trials
· One ranger to obtain aerial platform shooting qualifications
This project includes funds for:
· Contribution toward maintenance and/or hire of vehicles to be used for turtle monitoring and predator control activities
