Ethnobotany is the scientific study of relationships that exist between people and plants. Fieldwork undertaken by WIK and ethnobotanical researchers has identified and documented a number of medicinal plants, their traditional names and uses.

Plant extracts will be prepared for pharmacological testing and products eventually developed from the results of this research project will be highquality herbal pharmaceutical products underpinned by evidence of therapeutic effects that is based on both traditional and western scientific investigation.

This project provides a scientific understanding of the pharmacological and toxicological effects of traditional medicinal plants used  by WIK peoples. An additional benefit is the facilitation of the development of a hybrid economy on WIK homelands.
